Before and After
Finishing Touches
One of the most successful ways we have discovered to create extra structural stability in straw bale walls is by spraying U.B.C. compliant stucco on exterior and interior walls, according to local building codes.
Additionally, if building codes don’t specifically require a U.B.C. compliant based stucco to be used, then some natural plasters such as adobe-clay, lime (with a porch overhang,) etc... can be sprayed in layered coats. The pictures below, the first two coats are a cementitious and lime base coats and are sprayed on the interior and exterior walls to have equally permeability . Decorative Finishes
When hand applying stucco/plaster, much more time and energy are spent in the process and the plaster/stucco cannot penetrate into the straw as it does when it is sprayed on. Because plaster is an essential element in building with straw, it is important that it is applied correctly and with consistency.

Some of the Decorative Finishes we installed in the photos above are from
the 300 hundrend plus straw bale, plaster projects.
We use many different types of finish products.
Clients choice and some are natural Slaked Lime Plaster Finish which
go on thin layers over the base coats.
They are inherently water resistant, mold resistant, and durable.
All the finishes we use are highly versatile,
from the classical and contemporary finishes.
Other products such as, commonly called traditional stucco finish
have the history to withstand wear and endure to elements of nature.
They are made blended compond of portland cement,
hydrated lime, aggregates, and proprietary ingredients.
Interior finishes over the primed base coats we also use
gyspum plasters and clay plasters to give your walls a sophisticated elegance.
Plaster finishes is a topic that we will discuss with you durning the planning phase of building your straw bale structure.
